Welcome To Lyons

Lyons sits where the North and South St. Vrain Creeks meet, at the point where the plains stop and the foothills start — which is why it has been called the double gateway to the Rockies. It is a small town with an outsized cultural footprint: Planet Bluegrass has run its twenty-acre festival ranch here since 1994, and Oskar Blues started in Lyons in 1997. What buyers notice first is that it does not feel like a Boulder County commuter suburb. It feels like a mountain town that happens to be twenty minutes from Longmont.

Life In Lyons

What It's Like To Live In Lyons

Things To Do In Lyons

Planet Bluegrass's ranch on the edge of town hosts RockyGrass and the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, which reshape the town for a weekend at a time and are a genuine reason people move here. Main Street is walkable and small — a handful of restaurants, galleries and shops rather than a strip. La Mariposa Restaurant & Margarita House at 112 E Main St is a local fixture, cooking from scratch across all eight regions of Mexico with a list of more than forty margaritas. From town, CO-7 climbs toward Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, and the Peak to Peak Highway is right there.

Restaurants & Dining

Dining is concentrated on and just off Main Street, walkable end to end. La Mariposa Restaurant & Margarita House is the long-standing Mexican kitchen in the middle of it — scratch cooking, generous portions, and a margarita list people drive up for. Lyons also has the distinction of being where Oskar Blues began in 1997, which tells you something about how seriously a town of this size takes its beer.

Dog Parks & Pet-Friendly Spots

Worth knowing before you move here with a dog: Heil Valley Ranch, the 5,000-acre open space between Lyons and Boulder, does not allow dogs at all, for wildlife reasons. That surprises people who buy here specifically for the trail access. The St. Vrain corridor through town and the trails at Hall Ranch are where most local dog owners actually go, and leash rules apply on Boulder County Open Space.

Best Hikes & Trails Near Lyons

Lyons sits between two large pieces of Boulder County Open Space. Hall Ranch is the closer of the two, right at the edge of town, and Heil Valley Ranch covers about 5,000 acres of ponderosa and open hillside between Lyons and Boulder — both part of the North Foothills Open Space, and connected to each other by the Picture Rock Trail, which means you can genuinely ride or walk between them. Trailheads are reachable from town itself, which is unusual and is a large part of why people pay to live here.

Schools & Commute From Lyons

Schools: St. Vrain Valley Schools (Lyons Elementary and Lyons Middle/Senior High). Commute: About 12 miles / roughly 20 minutes to Longmont via US-36 and CO-66, and about 17 miles / roughly 30 minutes to Boulder — close enough that Lyons works as a real commuter base, far enough that it does not feel like one. Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park are up CO-7 from town. One thing to understand about Lyons before making an offer. The September 2013 flood sent both branches of the St. Vrain through the middle of town, destroying homes, businesses and the festival grounds and displacing thousands of people. The town rebuilt and is thriving — but floodplain designation, flood insurance requirements and what was rebuilt when are real questions on any property near the creeks, and they materially affect cost and resale. Ask them before you write an offer, not after inspection. Christine works throughout Boulder County and will tell you plainly which properties carry that question and which do not.
