Brush

Welcome To Brush

Brush sits 11 miles east of Fort Morgan on I-76 — close enough to share Fort Morgan's shopping and hospital runs, far enough to be unmistakably its own town. It's a rodeo-and-fairgrounds community: the Morgan County Fairgrounds are here, not in the county seat. For a town of 5,339 (2020 census) it carries a lot of infrastructure — four city parks, a municipal pool, a nine-hole golf course, its own hospital, and a school district that put its middle and high schools onto one modern campus in 2019. Buyers who start out looking at Fort Morgan very often end up looking here too: same commute, same schools-and-parks checklist, different small town.

Life In Brush

What It's Like To Live In Brush

Things To Do In Brush

The Fourth of July belongs to the Brush Rodeo, held July 2–4 at the Morgan County Fairgrounds on Ellsworth Street — bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing, mutton bustin', a nightly beer garden, a July 4 parade and fireworks. There have been rodeos in Brush since the early 1900s and an organized rodeo association since the 1950s; it joined the Colorado Professional Rodeo Association in 2005. The rest of the year: the Brush Area Museum & Cultural Center at 314 S. Clayton Street, a walkable historic downtown, nine holes at Petteys Park Golf Course, fishing at Doty Pond in Prairie Trails Park, the municipal pool and playground at Memorial Park, and the Pioneer skate park.

Restaurants & Dining

Brush punches above its size here. True Grits Steakhouse at 919 Edison Street, right off I-76 exit 90, is the sit-down steak dinner people drive in from other towns for. Drovers Culinary Cafe and Home Plate 2 on Edmunds Street cover breakfast and lunch, and Brush! Emporium & Pizzaporium at 210 Clayton Street is the downtown pizza stop. For anything beyond that it's 11 miles west to Fort Morgan.

Dog Parks & Pet-Friendly Spots

Brush has no fenced off-leash dog park, and it's better to say so than to dress it up. The dog-walking here is on-leash: the trail around Doty Pond in Prairie Trails Park (open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., dogs welcome on leash), plus the paths through Memorial and Petteys parks. The nearest fenced off-leash parks are Fort Morgan's two, 11 miles west.

Best Hikes & Trails Near Brush

Brush Prairie Ponds State Wildlife Area, just outside town, is the real find — about 650 acres of restored wetland and native grassland built out over two decades by Ducks Unlimited and the City of Brush, now a recognized birding hotspot, with a Fort Morgan Canal loop of roughly five miles. Read the rules first, because they're stricter than a city park's: it's a State Wildlife Area, so everyone 16 and older needs a hunting or fishing license or an SWA pass, wildlife viewing is limited to March 1 through August 31 in the posted areas, and the trails are unmarked and unmaintained. For something casual, the pond loop at Prairie Trails Park is in town; Jackson Lake State Park is about 45 minutes northwest, and mountain trailheads are better than two hours away.

Schools & Commute From Brush

Schools: Brush School District RE-2(J). Commute: About 11 miles and 15 minutes to Fort Morgan on I-76, about 92 miles and an hour and forty minutes to Denver, and about 94 miles to Fort Collins. East Morgan County Hospital is in town on West Edison Street; the larger Colorado Plains Medical Center is in Fort Morgan. For families already living in the county, the schools are Brush's practical draw: the district opened the Brush Secondary Campus in 2019, housing Brush Middle School and Brush High School together in one modern building, and enrolls roughly 1,400 students across four schools — small enough that a kid who wants to be on a team is on the team. Housing runs older and more attainable than the Front Range norm, with historic homes near downtown, post-war and newer subdivisions filling in around them, and irrigated acreage in every direction once you're past city limits.
