Wiggins is the Morgan County town closest to Denver, and the one that has changed the most. It started as a railroad depot in 1882 and sat at roughly the same size for decades — then it started growing in earnest when Front Range buyers ran out of affordable options and began looking east along I-76. It's still small: about 1,200 people, one school campus, a short row of businesses on Central Avenue. But the Kiowa Park subdivision on the edge of town has added new construction that would look at home in a Denver suburb, and the town has been planning for a good deal more of it. Elevation 4,557 feet, wide-open sky, and the shortest Front Range commute in the county.

Wiggins is a base camp more than a destination, and its best asset sits 13 miles north: Jackson Lake State Park, a warm-water reservoir with sandy beaches, 251 campsites, a marina with boat rentals, and swimming permitted in marked zones (no lifeguards, so it's at your own risk). In town there's the Delbert Teets Ball Field and Park, the newer playground and nature trail in Kiowa Park, and Movies in the Park in summer. The Old Trail School, a 1917 schoolhouse on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as the local museum. Bird hunting is a genuine draw out here — A-Plus Game Birds and Longmeadow Game Resort both run pheasant and duck operations nearby.
Three local places, and that's the honest count: Mariana's Family Restaurant at 612 Central Avenue for Mexican, Just 1 More at 217 Main Street for pizza, burgers and a drink, and High Plains Diner, whose green-chili-smothered breakfast burrito is the thing people order. Anything past that is 15 minutes east in Fort Morgan, or an hour southwest toward Brighton and Denver.
See More On Google Maps →No fenced off-leash dog park in Wiggins. Dogs walk on leash at Delbert Teets park and on the Kiowa Park nature trail, and Jackson Lake State Park allows leashed dogs on its shoreline and campground roads. The nearest fenced off-leash parks are Fort Morgan's two, 15 miles east.
There are no mountain trails out here, and no point implying otherwise. The real options are the Kiowa Park nature trail in town, the shoreline and campground loops at Jackson Lake State Park 13 miles north, and Riverside Park's six miles of South Platte river trails in Fort Morgan, 20 minutes east. Foothills trailheads above Boulder and Golden are about an hour and a half southwest.
Schools: Wiggins School District RE-50(J). Commute: About an hour to Denver on I-76 and under an hour to both Denver International Airport and Greeley — the shortest Front Range commute of any Morgan County town — plus about 15 miles and 20 minutes east to Fort Morgan. Wiggins is where Morgan County's new construction actually is. Kiowa Park has been built out by a mix of local and regional builders — Baessler Homes, Low Energy Homes, King Family Construction, 2 Valley Builders and Tru-Grit NoCo among them — so a buyer can still find a genuinely new house here at a price that no longer exists in Weld County's I-25 corridor. Two things worth asking before you write an offer: what the water and sewer connection situation is for the specific lot, and how the district is planning for growth, since one campus serves the entire town.
